Graduation Standards, Basic Companion

When participating in dog training, it is important to know exactly what skills your dog will learn, and how well your dog is expected to perform those skills. At Time and Patience Dog Training, we map out specific goals for you and your pet, to help you teach your dog to be your ideal family companion.

Jill Skorochod, owner and head trainer at Time and Patience Dog Training, served on the committee that developed these group class graduation standards on behalf of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP). All of the graduation standards at Time and Patience Dog Training either meet or exceed the IACP standards.

For a Basic Companion class, the graduation standards require your dog to perform the following skills reliably 80% of the time (4 out of 5 attempts), with a minimum of coaxing or correction:

Sit

  • Dog will sit from a stand or down, using a single command or signal.
  • Down

  • Dog will down from a stand or sit, using a single command or signal.
  • Recall

  • Dog will come from distance of 20 feet.
  • Recall ends with sit, which may be done on command.
  • Assistant may hold the dog at a distance of 20 feet.
  • Walking Nicely on Leash

  • Dog will remain with handler on 100-metre walk containing two stops.
  • Heeling is permitted but not required.
  • Stay

  • Dog will hold a stay (sit or down position) for a minimum of 60 seconds.
  • Handler will stand 6 feet from the dog during the stay.
  • The only movement permitted is a shifting of feet to maintain balance during a stand/stay.
  • Leave It/Off

  • Dog will leave an attractive/tempting object alone when asked.
  • Handling

  • Dog accepts gentle handling of feet, ears and mouth.
  • The dog will not show any resentment.
